Thanks chaps for the info on TV aerials. Just confirmed my memory. Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the very early ones an "H" shape as well as the "X" shape?
Yes they were. It may have been dependent on the transmitter. I've not found (yet!) a good photo of an H aerial.

Cracking picture Dave, but I hope that road wasn't on a bus route, otherwise that washing wouldn't have lasted long! Come to think of it, neither would the car nearest the camera, but as there appears to be a driver in it, perhaps he was just performing a three point turn? You don't see children walking around with toy guns anymore either....

I've just had a look at that picture again and one query I have is - where were the fireplaces in the rooms to match up to the placement of the chimneys - on the front wall, between windows and above the door? I can see an obvious route for one if the first floor room spanned the two windows and the fireplace was on the front wall above the door, but what about the other chimneys?

It depended on the transmitter. I recall some long discussions trying to work out whether to make some X or H aerials for a layout set on the Somerset & Dorset. We ended up choosing H but I'm still not sure it was right.

The thing to do is study period photos of places that best match where your layout is supposed to be.

Jim - I've placed a reply in a new thread Chimneys, Fireplaces and Aerials.

When you get around to it Alan, some junk on the blue boat would be good and also a little grime and rust on the metalwork :)

Phil, a fuller answer. One of the joys?? of this layout is when I get bored/fed up with doing one part of the layout I can switch to another. The only problem is it is easy to forget which bits need that bit of finishing off eg the roofs of the train shed and the goods shed.

Same here as to switching over to something else, I have sessions recording music as well as modelling, lately I have switched to the 43xx kit, but not at the moment as I am sun worshipping in Tenerife :)

Alan, I assume you are keeping the harbor as it is ie tide out, if so, what would look good and add to the realism is some large water pools. Porthcawl, about 30 miles from me has a very similar harbor, there are drainage open ended pipes coming out of one of the walls and at the bottom, there is always a trail of water from those pipes to the harbor mouth via groves etc in the silt. I have to edit that a bit as now, as the harbor has had a big facelift, it is now a "Marina" with barrage tide gates so there is now, always water there for the boats.
