Tales from The Room of Doom. Dipping a toe in various bucolic backwaters.

Nice pair.

Rob
These really are lovely, Rob...when I worked at Ham Street Station (ex-SER/SE&CR), I would sometimes reflect that at the beginning of the previous century, locos like these would have passed "my" station every day. I did consider modelling it, as it would be possible in N or 00, though I'm really too committed to other things for it to happen any time soon.
Cheers,
Simon.

Glad to hear that, Tim. I'm thinking of adding another one to the fleet, possibly a BR job or maybe.........just maybe........THE BLUE 'UN.

R

I've got the grey and SECR green ones coming, but also had the blue one on pre-order until a few months back... after seeing photos of the end product I can feel my resolve weakening. The best things come in threes after all!

Whilst my interests are those lighter laid, weedier backwaters of our railway system, those images taken against the black background really make the SE&CR livery pop.

I've mentioned before about a Minories inspired urban excursion and wonder if the same effect would be gained from a rather dark retaining wall.

Could be interesting, especially with the red coaching stock.

No probs, Rob.

Just thought it might help you visualise your thoughts with mention of pre-grouping locos and stock set against a background of high retaining walls.

Incidentally, I recall this photo was something to do with Minories and the Widened Lines, although I could be wrong. Squirrelled away some time ago, now.

This is Aldgate on the Metropolitan Railway. The lines on the left head towards Mark Lane (now Tower Hill) and those on the right head towards Aldgate East and Whitechapel on the Hammersmith & City and District lines. It's the top end of a triangular junction and I've annotated this NLS OS 1:1,250/1:2,500 1944-74 series extract to place the lines into context. You can also see how the area inspires the 'Minories' concept.

Yellow = Circle Line; Purple = Metropolitan Line; Pink = Hammersmith & City; Green = District Line. In addition to Baker Street, Aldgate remains the terminus of predominantly rush hour Metropolitan Line trains from Watford, Uxbridge, Amersham and Chesham.

Minories bus and coach station was the terminus of LT Green Line coach routes from the East - 721 from Brentwood, 722 from Corbets Tey and 723 from Tilbury (Ferry). The North-South cross London Green Line routes generally used Eccleston Bridge (across the centre of Victoria Station) as their main central stopping point. There were also a handful of circular Green Line routes which did avoid central London.

Apologies for the London Transport diversion, Rob - not exactly bucolic in the rural context :) - but it has it's own charm.

At the risk of going down a rabbit hole the colour of a red herring, that took me back to a visit last year to the LT Museum reserve colllection, with an RCL liveried up for a 721 coach. As someone brought up just outside Brentwood, those coaches were regarded as crème de la crème and trips on them were much sought after. Apologies Rob!

I guess I should add that my Dad drove the 721 from 1965 to the closure of Romford (RE) garage in 1977. This RCL was allocated to Romford and is a genuine Romford RCL. The Green Line drivers got the same rate of pay as the Reds, because the services went through the central area. This annoyed them as the Green Line services were limited stop, the Red drivers thought they were doing less work for the same money. Cold shoulders were shown in the shared canteen at Bow Garage. An RCL could get away from the stop faster than a standard RM too!

One to convert back to an O with the sandboxes on the leading splashers? :)

My grandfather captured Southern O A427 (ex-SECR O 427) at the ex-SER Ramsgate Town station around 1923-24. This loco was scrapped in 1925 without being rebuilt to an O1.
