Tales from The Room of Doom. Dipping a toe in various bucolic backwaters.

Evening all.

With Sheep Dip's trip to Uckfield now just under two weeks away, layout preparation is underway. This unfortunately has included the removal and replacement of one of the points due to a pesky short.

The replacement point had to be painted and weathered before being laid. Tricky as the weathering needed matching to the existing trackwork.

Step two- Paint sleepers ( Humbrol 173 )

Step three- Add Dark Rust weathering powder to rails, chairs, etc.

Step four- Weather sleepers with various weathering powders.

The rest can be blended in situ once ballasted but this is the current state of play, prior to weathering.

Morning all.

I've finally laid the point and added the ballast. The usual PVA mix was employed to bind it all together, except it didn't. Glued on Friday but as of late Sunday afternoon, it still wasn't dry.

Mysteriously, Sheep Dip made it's way from the garage only to be 'discovered' by the Memsahib in it's revised drying location on the dining table, yesterday morning.

The ballast had dried off and is now solid. Last night, a bit of blending in took place whilst I shouted at the telly as Wales failed to deliver against Belgium.

With due apologies for a very bad image, here's the current state of play.

Fishplates to paint, weeds and grasses to add, track pins to camouflage.

Looking forward to seeing you and it on Sunday. Hopefully you don't have to park to long on the M25, I shall avoid it on the way to Eastbourne around lunchtime on Friday by using A roads from the M3.

I too am looking forward to meeting up with everyone. It will be well worth the trek.
I am currently waiting for paint to dry before applying a few, final tweaks before reassembly. I anticipate a long evening tomorrow !

Here is a helicopter view of Sheep Dip, this evening.

Looking forward to visiting on Sunday as I am exhibiting London Road Sidings at the Beckenham show on Saturday. Rob, re the photos of the replacement point above, please explain the protrusions from the rail ends. Obviously they are to conduct power to adjoining tracks, but what are they made from and how are they attached? How do you connect them to the adjoining rails, especially as in this case the adjoining track is already fixed down? Thanks Rob.

Hi Terry,

Thanks. Can you expand on your question. I'm not quite following you.

Morning all.

Well, that's that. Uckfield turned out as expected. It really is a great show, organised by an excellent bunch of club members who simply cannot do enough for their exhibitors over the weekend. It can be tricky being a solo operator, especially over a two day show but the club kept an eye on me.

It was lovely to meet so many people ( at the risk of inadvertently missing someone too many to mention individually ) chat about Sheep Dip and generally catch up. At times, we were pretty much submerged so I do apologise if I didn't get to you. Inevitably, there are now a few small jobs to attend to before Sheep Dip goes out again but nothing too arduous. This was the second time SD went out as a DCC operated layout and I need to improve the running of the Pecketts with the fitting of stay alives being the obvious progression. The Hornby 08 was, as always, fine.

The two days were busy for pretty much the whole period with Sunday perhaps the busier of the two.....From a chat with Team Uckfield, numbers were pretty good over both days.

Rye Sands was a standout layout. Exceeded all expectations seeing it for real and Will is just a lovely chap. Given the fact that he was in the same room as one Jerry Clifford, I would never be surprised if Rye doesn't appear in MRJ at some point, and deservedly so. It is just a great bit of modelling.

Special mentions as well to East Lynn Quay, exhibited by Simon and Maurice and of course, Laxfield who looked smashing after the refurb. Hats off to John and Rod for being brave enough to haul a 40 odd year old layout up from Devon. The delightful Caledonian Yard was very nice indeed and it was lovely to chat to Tim and Richard over the weekend.

One thing I didn't manage was to pick up some P4 bits and bobs. I simply didn't get there but not a drama.

I did, however, pick up a couple of Peter Harding's booklets on a couple of backwaters, which are quite excellent.
