7mm National Railway Museum Workbench

A V2 which suffered a bit of a knock.

The cab was the main part which got damaged - the cab had been super glued in position at some point so it didn't stand up well.

Cleaned up, filler removed, footplate straightened and the cab fitted much better than before the accident.

The tender suffered a little - one side parted company from the footplate. To make sure everything stayed in place, I clamped the tender together giving me two hands free for soldering. The heat damaged the paint significantly but this was expected.

Now it's looking more like a V2 again.

Very much a 'layout loco' - it lacks brake gear and other details but it runs beautifully and passing at a scale sixty you don't actually notice :)

Restoring the paint will be interesting; I think it may end up rather filthy to hide the scars! At the moment I can't really justify a full strip and repaint but for a quicky it'll produce a decent result. I do enjoy jobs like these, much like my K3 when I get round to it.

There's something really satisfying about restoring locos back to working order and refreshing them cosmetically - they'll never be showcase models but they'll bring a lot of pleasure to people :)

Congratulations - that's a really good restoration job given the age of the loco.

I'm sure one of my Dad's locos is in the National Railway museum stock, I thought it was a V2 but I'm fairly positive I can say that isn't that one!

Thank you :)

I really don't think this is your dad's work!

Looking at this trail of damage, the Museum drivers must be a pretty rough bunch! :D

It would be interesting to learn how the layout is run - some automation and some by a roster of operators?

Hooligans!

Seriously though it's when stock comes off for cleaning when it's at most vulnerable.

I'm not sure what happened to the other V2 though.

These days it's a Heathcote system using IRDOTs for detection with a manual override.

Basic mix -

Humbrol -

27004 Metalcote Gunmetal
33 Matt Black
62 Matt Leather

Revell -

69 Matt Granite Grey

The latter replaced Humbrol Matt Tarmac.

Mix to taste :)

Crikey!

No wonder it has depth and atmosphere.

Thanks for sharing, James.

A nice and straightforward renumbering and weathering for this Dapol Jinty. I also removed the vacuum brake equipment for a bit of variation :)

For this one I decided to try genuine turpentine rather than white spirit for thinning. The smell alone makes it a much better experience!
Hi James , how did using the genuine turps go ? I assume good but we all know where making assumptions can end up .
