Hello James

I was at the NRM earlier today, including having a look at the model railway.

At one end of the viewing area there are two sets of shelves housing a display of models, mostly of some age judging by their wheels. There doesn’t appear to be any information offered about their origin(s). I noticed this one in particular:

(Sorry about the photo — nothing I could do about the reflections from the glass)

No. 4476 is a Bassett-Lowke ‘Flying Scotsman’ that has been very skilfully improved with added detail and repainted. Underneath, it’s lithographed tinplate assembled using the tab-and-slot method. I am aware of Bassett-Lowke Flying Scotsman models thought to have been upgraded by Bond’s. Bassett-Lowke also offered their own upgrade service in the late 1950s — marketed as ‘Nu-scale’ — and would customise models to order. I would guess the alterations to 4472/4476 are the work of an accomplished amateur, mostly likely its original owner.

Do you know anything about the provenance of this model? It would be interesting to know if the alterations could be firmly attributed to a particular business or individual.

Hi Martin,

This is the entry on the online catalogue and it doesn't reveal too much I'm afraid.

I can see if I can find anything further, I'm in tomorrow.
Thanks, James.

As you say, the description is essentially correct as far as it goes. I’m not sure what the ‘credit’ to Arthur Hey implies. The person who wrote the catalogue entry? Or who identified the model? Or donated it to the NRM?

Anyway, thanks for asking. It may well be that it is no longer known who altered the model.

90045, a proper old school scratch build loco that was donated to the Museum's model railway but spent a number of years in storage.

It has been serviced and has had tender pick ups fitted, the wires still need trimming and soldering in place.

I have tried to be subtle, so typical Dubdee - it's such a lovely model I think weathering has brought it to life.

Just a crew, coal and fire irons to add next.

Arthur Hey appears to be the gentleman who donated the model, his name appears here too -

Many models in the collection are missing builder's details sadly.
