LarryG's loco & coach WB (4mm/00)

One of the reasons I could not work in 7mm scale was the length of time it took to build one coach. Building a 4mm coach fits into my interest span which is rather short in reality.

It is marked how model building has changed since kit days when one can only buy a very limited range of coach bogies and coach kits today. A Mallard GWR Bars III Toplight would go down well!

This particular coach did not look well on the rather clunky Bachmann bogies, so a 'withdrawn' Hornby Hawksworth coach has donated its bogies. Seen here with my slightly adapted brass top plates that take tension-lock couplings awaiting spraying ...

Looking better IMV on Hornby bogies. Wizard Models cast corridor connections will be fitted when they arrive...

Hi Larry,

You might strike lucky in August at Railwells, the current owner of the Blacksmiths/Mallard range normal attends with etches only. What ever you do, DON'T PURCHASE FROM THE WEBSITE, only part with your cash when you have the bits in your hand. He has been known to have been paid for online purchases and never delivered the goods.

Several years ago when attending as an exhibitor our layout was just around the corner from his stand and I overheard a number of very heated discussions about the lack of goods being dispatched, even though he had received payment. It suprised me that there was no acts of violence.

There are several locked threads about kits from Somerset on the other channel.

Thanks for the warning Phil. I never attend exhibitions and so I will keep an eye on eBay. Blacksmith/Mallard coach kits are useful just for the sides.

I will get on with some other 'winter' jobs while awaiting parts. First off is a Dapol 41xx. The BR green is too late for the period on my layout so it will go plain black. 3-screw removal releases the body from chassis., but it is necessary to remove the decoder PCB from inside the smokebox beforehand. The cab roof and backhead simply pull off. Copper capped chimney masked off but not safety valve...

I miscalculated when soldering the ends to the floor and had to remove them once the sides were in place. A small section of roof was held in place on top of the sides while the ends were tucked snugli in and tacked in place from the outside. At least I know what do do on the next Period I coach. Bent step sorted...

I have uploaded this image of the LMS D1755 bk. compo once again because making a corridor partition from scrap parts was the start of construction...

After a false start on the Midland Bk. compo and scrapping it, I reverted to Plan A and this is as far as thing got tonight. A scrap roof helps during construction as it prevents the sides from bowing in while fitting solebars etc....

I am currently awaiting extruded ali roofs and have been for a few weeks, hence the lack of activity on here. If I were still earning a crust, I would be very irritated having my wages tied up for long periods, but the world has changed since 2018. They were promised a week ago, so fingers crossed they come within the website's stipulated 28 days.

I have built no less than 30 coaches while keeping myself occupied, but there is no point in continuing much further and so the exiting stock of component parts will not be topped up again. Wizard Models and Phoenix Precision always deliver smartly, but obviously they dont stock everything that's needed...
