Slowly been doing a bit here and there to my JLTRT 2251. Main bit left to do is the backhead. I had to make a new balance weight for the centre wheels as the kit on supplied is too small. I think when built they had a smaller one as per the kit. One little problem to overcome is that the rear brake shafts won't go past the motor mount. I have used a cheap Chinese motor that I bought a long time ago and never used married up to an etched gearbox with 26:1 gears I think. It works fine so loath to change them. I downloaded the Slaters motor/gearbox template but it looks like it too will stick too low and foul the brake shafts. Think when I take it apart I'll solder another metal strip across the fold up gearbox further up and then remove the bottom bit that's in the way. Should be able to fit the ash pan in then!

Bit more done to my 2251. Managed to cut a bit of the fold-up etch gearbox to clear the brake rigging and get room to fit the ashpan although as you can see from my picture it hardly shows. The brake shafts going across the cranks had to be bent out of the way of the cranks, are the cranks a bit too big? Anyway you can't tell from the side when it's on the track. Also ran out of the thicker bar for the shafts, just my luck so one is a bit thinner. Backhead is nearly finished. Pictures of the model backhead from the CD supplied is slightly different to 3205 so I went more with the real one. Also they show the 4 way lubricator tray on the left of the backhead but 3205 does not have one, was this standard on all of them or just this in preservation? Got to make a pep pipe for it as well.IMG_8512.JPG

Thanks for all the help with the compensation question earlier. I found I had an Impressionist etched unit stashed away so used that by soldering the bearings on the inside and reaming out 3/16th, obvious really  So here is the 3D print VGA van just about done in an afternoon. Just hope I don't break those corner steps or bufferheads.

Hi Brian

Would you be good enough to let us know the source of the VGA kit?

If you would like more substantial buffers, have a look at the spares on the Accurascale website - very reasonably priced.

I would be inclined to make the corner steps from square section rod and scrap etch to give a more robust fitting. That's what I use for coach ascender steps.

Regards.

I bought it off ebay Bill. Turns out Will Thompson made it. Don't know if he trades under any other name. The buffers are ok so long as you don't have any rough shunts or derailments! Very nice details on the buffer bodies.
Did anyone take on Impressionist stuff as everything is out of stock on the website. This was the unit I used, nice thick metal fold up compensation unit | Impressionist Models
