Wildlife in the garden - at any time of year

Out of curiosity, I read the page on the Bright Wave that Dave kindly linked to.

The last paragraph caught my attention

I wonder where those golf courses are, as we do have a golf course about a couple of miles away but we are a long way from Kent...

Upon a further look they have a report a sighting form so i will investigate that further.

Just recently we have had a number of partridges coming and going through the back garden and one of Chris's wildlife cameras picked them up

It might be this one. As soon as we had the fence installed it became a squirrel highway. The feeder hold Sunflower Hearts for the birds supposedly.

I’ve been stuck in hospital for a couple of weeks, and have a window to watch the birdies. So far, I have seen wood pigeons, a pied wagtail, and a female peregrine. I wonder what the next three weeks will bring?!

An uncommon visitor to our garden this afternoon:



I think this is only the third hummingbird hawk-moth I have seen in our garden in over thirty years.

I found this Scarlet Tiger Moth perched on a yew hedge yesterday. The colour and patterning certainly got my attention.

As usual we have had hedgehogs visiting since they woke up earlier in the year. We have lots of night videos of them, but recently Chris repositioned her other camera and she's picked up some really good daylight videos of our visitors.

I found this Elephant Hawk Moth resting on my Basil plant in the greenhouse.

Spotted this youngster sitting atop a hebe in the garden yesterday. I've no idea where 'home' is. A bit of research suggests that it is a young goldfinch. We have huge numbers of them around us and their evening chorus is a delight! This one has yet to acquire its 'red hat'. We left this one alone and it had gone a while later.

I always feed the Foxes and of late there has been some strange goings on with there food, I put the camera out and this little chap turned up! Never seen one before, let alone in my garden!

Still getting the Foxes, this is one of this years cubs.

Re Martin's Humming Bird Hawk Moth.
The BTO's Garden Bird Watch weekly Sunday missive reported that sightings this year are way more than any previous year. This moth is the only moth that the BTO records data on! It is magnificent and I was lucky to have three around a patch of lavender that MrsT demanded I plant. At 1000ft up in very wettest Wales I expected to pull the dead lavender up after the first winter. Instead the original plants and the cuttings I took are all thriving. Full of insects.

I always feed the Foxes and of late there has been some strange goings on with there food, I put the camera out and this little chap turned up! Never seen one before, let alone in my garden!

Still getting the Foxes, this is one of this years cubs.

We don’t see badgers very often, but the evidence of their visits is there if you look. Paw prints in wet mud, fur on the lowest strand of barbed wire in the fence, bees’ and wasps’ nests dug out, all our strawberries gone overnight. There’s a badger latrine in a grassy area about 20 yards from our boundary. My best guess is they visit the garden every night.

The Boss came across this little fella last week, it appeared to be suffering from heat exhaustion



After a few nights with us with plenty of food and water, it appears to have done a runner and left our garden.

Maybe he'll come back another day.
