The area you've chosen is a particular favourite of mine and have thought of an imaginary terminus in the Bigbury/Burgh Island area. So much scope in that part of the South Hams.

Trawling through some old B&W photos kindly given to me by local haulier Frank Drake I found these two of some local characters, Frank's wife Flossie and sister Millie and Dr. Grenville waiting for the 10.55 Exeter train.

It would... keen observers of my post would also note the Link given behind the names of Les and Roy to the relevant Wikipedia page.
Of course, they were Northern Battleaxes, (go on, I'll do it - "and so were Cissie and Ada" ) so Alan's South Devon residents wouldn't have been the inspirations anyway, but they just reminded me of that classic pose they had...

Another one of Frank Drake's early 60's shots, this time of Newton's Burmington Grange.

After thinking for ages about shortening the distance between tender and loco of my Manor I at long last got round to doing it.
Here are before and after pix:

After the Manor I did the mogul.

As with the Manor I cut off the original pin and replaced it, closer to the tender with a brass pin, thus giving closer coupling, just need to add a fall plate. I feel it looks much better

How did you work out how much to close the gap by, Alan, and what radius curves can they take now?
It does improve the look no end!

I have a couple of Bachmann halls which are comparatively close coupled and go round all my curves and measured the gap and then the gap of the mogul and Manor and took away to see how much I could shorten the tender- loco drawbar.

the smallest radius on the layout are the peco medium radius curves in the goods yard. on the running lines I used large radius points and curved points. The minimum radius of the running lines is 2ft 6inches on the branch and 3ft on the main.

Jordan, having just re read my reply to your question about loco tender coupling distances I must apologise for my reply. It is not my best written post. I'm glad you were able to understand it.

Added the fall plates to the Manor and 22xx. they hardly show up in the photos but what one does notice is a lack of light between loco and tender. Quite a subtle improvement I think.

Another Western arrives at Wencombe, Western Enterprise Heljan). Hoses added for its first couple of years but still needs wipers, etched plates and lion and I hope some subtle weathering.



Looking at the photos you would think that they were two different paint jobs. I can assure you they aren't. It why I always wonder if arguing about the exact shade of a colour is a bit of a meaningless exercise, it depends on light and memory, neither very consistent.
