Wencombe /Kingsbridge Regis/Louville Lane

For those interested in the travels of Salmon Pastures we were at Ely last Saturday at their exhibition. A great day capped by being voted layout of the show.

Anyway back to Kingsbridge (although it might become Kingscombe) I stirred myself from all this exhibiting and operating and went into the railway room to do some more work on my layout. At long last laid the road and the new area of platform, a job I'd been putting off as it meant working on a 2 step stepladder and leaning across the layout. However a couple of photos. The half relief building in the first photo is the back of a Kibri kit (looks more British than the front) and will be the Seaview Hotel although not necessarily in its present position.

Platform now painted and edging done.
I also started on the station building, it will be vaguely based on Kingswear a single storey wooden building. I thought a couple of the new Peco laser cut station buildings might do the trick. At the moment obviously needs a roof, windows, doors and painting.

..... It is Bachmann one of their Junior Range. I thought I might do some work on it and make it the harbour loco. However I'm now not sure whether I will have a harbour siding .....

Please do and I rather think you should.

I find that hacking toys into believable models is a fantastically rewarding process even if it doesn't garner any finescale brownie points. I look on it as getting in touch with one's inner Ahern. Over at the other place, a long time ago, Andy York started a very creditable marriage of Bachmann and Hornby0-4-0 saddle tanks though I'm not sure it was ever completed.

Unfortunately Neil it was part exchanged for track and points, in fact a straight swap. At least I got my money back.

Did some work on the station building, painting it and the doors and windows.

Lots of detail to add yet.

Work continues. Detail added and roof tiled. Now needs ridge and chimneys.

The station buildings will be roughly based on Kingswear, a wooden station building and trainshed, and also a platform canopy, which I have started.

As normal putting off packing till almost the last minute I decided to mock up (very roughly) the train shed. The goods shed will abut the left hand side over the siding and the platform canopy will abut the end, very similar to Kingswear.

The train shed makes a real difference to the appearance of the layout - and a very welcome one, I think - but could it, perhaps, be a little longer so as to provide a bit of cover over the exit to to station? The canopy on the platform would then look as it probably would have been in reality, a later addition.

The backscene is rather good too. Did you paint it?

Thanks Adam, Yes I did paint the backscene.

The main entrance to the station is actually half way along the station building. The area next the Gents will have the traditional wooden fencing around it, and the end of the bay platform will be fenced off.

Since coming back from a 2 week break (trying, unsuccessfully, to revive the Greek economy) I have started on the train shed proper. I felt the roof was too flat in the mock up and I have given it a slightly steeper pitch based on photos in GWRJ no. 25.

I roofed the train shed with SE Finecast corrugations, not too sure about it the overlaps look too obvious, perhaps I should have used the sheets as they come. Perhaps it is the harsh shadow caused by it still being white. it may look better when painted and weathered. I do have enough corrugations to start again.

I also made a preliminary cut out of the end of the goods shed.

I've started the Goods shed.

Whilst buying plasticard etc in my local model shop I spotted this Bristol double decker in Western National colours, a snip at £5-00 I thought.

Nice - the bus sets your date as after '62, which is when Butlin's at Minehead opened. Later than I'd thought (Butlin's, that is).

As I said in post 538 I was not happy at the over scale appearance of the overlaps on the train shed roof. Indeed they would have been over scale in 7mm if not Gauge 1. The more I looked at well kept real corrugated roofs the more I realised that the overlaps were almost NOT noticeable. So I ripped up the old roof and re-did it with larger sections so that there would be no overlaps in the horizontal plain. If when I start painting I feel it needs something, I will either score a line or paint or draw a faint line before the final washes go on.

More work on train shed and put the roof on the goods shed followed by some basic painting. there is more detail to add, barge boards, guttering , glazing and more glazing bars plus weathering.

Those of you who know Kingswear will possibly see a passing resemblance.
