The new station pilot D3169 ( MMP 08 ) , surrounded by wagons...
The wagons always give a new pilot a hard time at first, testing their boundaries and seeing how much mischief they can get away with. A good pilot will quickly establish its authority, a few rough shunts where necessary, some kindness to the older wagons and a healthy respect for the loaded tanks….

Thank you chaps!

We had a couple of derailments during the running session, so that went on to the snag list. Investigations found that the locating tongue on the lifting section had shifted ( probably from when I dropped it a week ago ). So some remedial work to fix the tongue and adjust the height of the flap position ensured all of the rails were back in alignment again. Don't drop things...

Tony, you can get snubbers/dampers with light springs from industrial suppliers - they are designed to “catch” things like this and decelerate them firmly but gently. Might save damage if it gets dropped in future. I have catalogs at work, and can have a look tomorrow if it would help?

Thank you Simon - yes, that might be an idea...

Goods yard expansion. Shunting the kick back sidings requires the coal siding to be cleared each time. So I dusted off my Templot skills and plotted out a double slip to replace the single turnout and allow the addition of a headshunt. Originally I was going to use toe to toe points, but it didn't look right at all...

Out with the milling machine to make some point blades...

I was trying to work out from your picture how you set the rail up at the correct angle for milling. I have a small Proxxon milling machine, but I still file point blades by hand because I can't think of a reliable way to set it all up.

Hi Richard -

I jack up the end of the brass bar with an 'L' shaped piece of brass wire - I think it is 1.3mm. You can see the long leg projecting from the table. You can vary the length of the bar and thickness of the wire to change the angle of the plane.

Thanks Martin -
Thats an interesting and informative page.
