Tales from The Room of Doom. Dipping a toe in various bucolic backwaters.

On the most recent occasion that I’ve spoken to Peco, I had a helpful & prompt response, and the bits I needed followed a few weeks later, as explained.

I too have previously contacted Peco and they were excellent. In relation to work, I speak with them most weeks and again, no real issues. However, on the subject of the Rail 200 and based on personal experience and the testimony of others, there does appear to be some issues.

This is looking good Rob.

That's very kind of you, John. I must admit, I'm pleased with how it looks, even in it's current, very basic, guise.

the vivid red adds something IMO

Doesn't it ! There's something about venetian red that really pops.

Hi Rob,
It looks really promising! Could you remind me please, of the size of the baseboard.
Many thanks.
Mark

Thanks, Mark. And to confirm, 120cm x 40cm.

Rob

This has your trademark written all over it already.

Apart from anything else, I like the flow of the track.

Jon

Thank you, Jon. Despite its simplicity, once you start bending the trackwork, I think it draws the eye away from that very simplicity. I could of course be fooling myself into thinking that but that's the explanation I'll stick with for now !

Going off on something of a tangent ( again ! ), I've finally got my hands on a copy of this, albeit a slightly dog eared example but the innards are fine.

No, I'm not going all tiddly trains but this is a very nice read. I'm a firm believer that inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere and Roy Link's approach to his chosen subject is indeed, very inspiring.

Nice.

His track plans in the Modeller were works of art. His drawings of buildings and (narrow gauge) locos too.

One of the first things that drew me into the whole industrial/micro layout/narrow gauge thing was Roy's article about the 1:48 scale Crowsnest Tramway in RM in....1979 or so?
The combination of larger scale/smaller layout is quite intriguing...I've had a few goes at it, but never quite cracked it yet.
The highly detailed nature of the whole endeavour: back story, loco, stock, building and scenery was very different to the norm at the time. He was an excellent communicator of ideas and dreams. If you want to be sucked further in to this sort of thing, "The Book of Samson" (different author, same publisher), which chronicles the conception and building of the new build replica loco of the same name and includes quite a bit about the railway the original ran on, is also well worth having.

Evening all,

In yet another tangentially, twisty turn, I had news today of an impending arrival. Bang on time, the Roco CSD T466 Bo-Bo has arrived on these shores.
This is the first of this year's good Communist Czech releases to land and one I'm rather excited by as the loco is a favourite.

( I've gone for the non noisy option by the way )

How does this compare with the MTB-model version? I have never actually seen either but the photos look good.

Morning,

I have an example from MTB. It's a solid bit of kit. I'm expecting the Roco job by early next week latest ( Probably before the week end ) so I'll have a good look at both.
My gut tells me that the Roco example will be more refined but we shall see. If that does prove to be the case, the MTB job may be moved on, to offset the purchase of this one as I really do not need two.
I have a similar situation with the Bardotka. The Roco example, good as the MTB model is, edges it in terms of fine detail.

The M152 Railbus from Roco really is lovely. I have two examples and as such, I have no intention of getting the MTB version. Much as I want to support MTB, the better level of detail gets the vote, even if more expensive.

However, I'm going back to Czech in about six weeks. I'm hoping to pick up a MTB 820 as I really like them and there is no alternative. That pretty much puts the tin hat on any loco/Railcar requirements for the future Czech project.

For me, the Roco T466 has it..
Definitely. Handrails a bit more refined for one thing. But the MTB would pass muster if there was no alternative.

I always find models like this fascinating, where I know nothing at all about the prototypes. At Shows I'm the opposite of those who walk straight past anything they're not familiar with or don't model themselves - I'll often spend far more time in front of 'Foreign' layouts than UK outline ones.
