How many trains are you running to need a passing loop?

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology, and should be calling it a run around loop.

I'm aware that few stations on the KESR (and other Col Stephens lines for that matter) had a loop, but I've done the "single track halt and sidings" scheme before (Pattyndenne), and I don't fancy doing it again. I'm loathe to have two fiddle yards, given the likelihood that I will end up exhibiting the layout on my own. It would also make the overall footprint of the layout larger than I'd like.

To avoid the impression that this is a terminus, the loco release at the left hand and will continue through a set of (closed) crossing gates and run up to the backscene.

There is a broader background for the scene which provides a sufficient explanation (at least for me) for services reversing back into the fiddle yard. The station is part of the Cranbrook & Tenterden Light, which would have met with the Hawkhurst line at Cranbrook. In my world, the CTLR have ceased running regular services as far as Cranbrook, perhaps due to flooding or competition from the mainline.

Exactly the kind of thing I had in mind with my failed "Plumtree Cross" layout (here) - one day I'll get back to having another go at that. But then looking at the later photos on the same thread, my 'main' layout hasn't progressed much in two years...

Here's where things currently stand on the new layout project, now known as Coursehorn. The baseboards are broadly complete, bar the proscenium arch and fascia wings. These are awaiting a trip to B&Q to get some 6ft sheets of ply, as my poor planning resulted in the baseboard being about 10mm longer than all the sheets in my current stock.

The track is now glued down, although wiring is totally absent at present. I have a dangerous tendency to rush, so what I might initially consider setbacks are probably better seen as valuable time for reflection. For one, I had planned to get the point control (wire in tube) installed this weekend, but ended up finding the wire too bendy and the tubes too big! This planning time has been a valuable opportunity to remind myself of a few ideas I had initially considered, and then forgotten in my initial rushing:

1. I'd like to try a backscene that curves both in the corners and past vertical, as on @chrisb 's marvellous Cessy-en-Bois. I'd also like to nab his fibre optic stars, and possibly even add a moon (as on @magmouse 's Basuto Quay). This is likely a bit ambitious, but I feel I ought to try something a bit more advanced than the flat, painted backscenes I've done before.
2. Cassettes - Coursehorn will use cassettes, which still requires some thinking and design work to figure out how they will be secured and powered. I'm tempted to try a combination of 3D printed alignment grooves, which the cassettes will slot onto, and spring loaded pickups that bear on the outside of the cassettes.
I ended up settling on a simple, and slightly contrived track plan using an asymmetric 3-way point. I'm not entirely happy with how this feels - perhaps a bit cramped, but I was keen to move the pointwork on scene, to avoid the cassettes having to be moved around during shunting operations.

I have put together a barn (inspired by the one adjacent to the KESR at Rolvenden) and made further progress with the station building. These two projects have been some of the most enjoyable I have done in months; after endlessly struggling (and failing) with various etched kits, it was nice to work with something as soft and forgiving as styrene. I got a bit carried away with the station building, adding a full interior. My excuse is that it is positioned right at the front of the layout, so is extremely visible. Hopefully, with the addition of some micro LEDs, this work won't go unnoticed!

At the behest of Rob (NHY 581), I'd like to introduce my cameo layout, Rye Sands.

Rye Sands is a creative re-interpretation of the Rye Harbour Tramway, a short branch built by the South Eastern Railway connecting Rye Harbour to their line from Ashford to Hastings. It was really inspired by a series of photos, which I stumbled across last summer. These images paint a picture of a desolate community full of quirky structures, and quite at odds with the beautiful Wealden scenery that the SER/SECR are most associated with.

The layout was really built around three structures:

1. Sea View Cottage, a house at Rye Harbour which still stands to this day. I was intrigued by the choice to paint the house's name in massive font on the side wall - I'm still not sure what the purpose of this was!

2. Watch House (the black building on the left of the below picture) - this building also still exists. The jaunty chimney and small watch tower were just begging to be modelled.

3. this nondescript wooden shed. This was actually the first structure that set me on the path to building this layout. The plan (before Rye) had been to make a similar layout set at Folkestone, then Port Victoria, and finally Dungeness. This shed was somewhere in the Folkestone Harbour complex. I've got a bit of a thing for wooden weather-boarded buildings, as they feel distinctly Kentish to me.

The layout is set at the end of the passing loop on the harbour tramway. The track plan (along with the pier) is inspired by reality, but I compressed it and added a small headshunt part way through the build. The original intention had been to show that you can make an engaging layout with just one point (and a traverser). I stand by this fact, but I felt the visual balance of the layout was off with the original track plan, as the yard area was a bit 'thin' in the middle of the layout. This left just a bit too much empty space at the front of the layout. Obviously, adding this point also made the layout infinitely more fun to operate, not that i'd like to admit it!

I used a cameo approach to the layout. It has an open frame baseboard (but with a sort of ply webbing on the bottom, which has holes cut in for access) with integral backscene and fascia. This makes it amazingly light (I can pick it up with one finger) but has proved an absolute nightmare when trying to work on scenics, due to the extremely small aperture which you have to reach through. This problem is even worse at the right hand end of the layout, where Sea View Cottage makes uncoupling three links unfathomably difficult... and in pictures you can't even see the tiny finial on the roof of the cottage, which snaps off about once a day!

The layout is almost complete now. I'm on to the final detailing jobs, and the only major outstanding task is to add the water in the harbour. I'm procrastinating this as 1) I don't want to do it whilst the weather is cold and 2) I've still not figured out what product to use.

I'm due to be taking Rye Sands to the Uckfield show in October this year. This will be both me and the layout's first shows, so I'm both excited and nervous.

I absolutely love the subtle colourings on the buildings for your new layout. I’m very much looking forward to seeing it “in the flesh“ in due course.

Thank you Andy. It’s a combination of basically every colour of Woodland Scenics fine ballast. It took a while to get the right balance of each but from memory it’s primarily tan/greys with approx 20% brown and a tiny amount of cinder ballast

I managed a quick squint at the other layouts, in a gap between fighting the gremlins that beset us during the weekend. I was with the club's layout Stanhope Brewery.
