Were those SD70 new build or secondhand refurbished jobs?
So is this the Rock Island route, or did it come out of Chicago in a different direction?Yesterday was warm sunny day, very spring like, almost summer by our standards. So some more lunchtime railfanning was required.
I walked down to the Roosevelt Road overbridge, about 25 minutes south from our office. It's one of the classic views of train in Chicago.
The tracks lead into Union station from the south, Metra uses the lefthand platforms and Amtrak the right hand which are through running to west with the exit in the phots I posted yesterday.

Amtrak and Metra have large depots here.
The view looking south, Metra on the right, Amtrak on the left.

This then started to move, it was a GP30 but I'm now reliably informed it's a GP39-2

A few Amtrak locos were parked up on the other side of the tracks

But no sign of any trains, and I had been there 20 minutes.

Hi BrianWere those SD70 new build or secondhand refurbished jobs?
No JB, this is not the Rock Island route, that went to Van Buren Station at Van Buren and La Salle streets. The bridge I'm on does go over that line if I'm looking towards the city it's about a 5 minute walk to my right, you can see the trains on that line in the distance from where I'm stood. So is this the Rock Island route, or did it come out of Chicago in a different direction?
JB.
In the posts above the reporting number 514 appears on two different locos... is this pdrmitted?

Then this arrived the first car is from the Federal Railroad Association

Wow, that's impressive, I guess it's a huge country and all that. It makes sense unlike the UK and it's measly 8% or rail freight.Hi Tony
As I understand it about 50% of all freight int he US moves by rail.
