Picked up this at a local auction last week. Finally had time to take it out of its box and snap it. I like it, it's my favourite style DMU, in fact any type of MU...IMG_1187.JPG

That's nice but I'm afraid I can't keep it. I bought it to sell on. If I were to keep it I would finish it as per the old days, when men had long hair, women had short skirts and everyone had no morals – green with go-faster stripes!

It's never been run and was part of a collection – this was the only 7mm item he had! I'll spin it around the test track when I go to the club, just to make sure everything's in order, but it'll be on ebay after that – unless anyone wants to twist my arm beforehand?

Go on keep it sell the 47 .A two car set up is ideal for a small space layout .Re long hair and mini skirts that would be later green yellow panel or even worse blue yellow ends the whiskers were more akin to Mods and rockers imo:p hows the 31 coming on? wf

Eddie Edit image shows one of the many Westdale fame single car units not a soon to be very collectable one  . sorry about the in your face hand rails never noticed it till now

Haha! I would love to keep it, seriously! I may try to find a way around it. At the same auction I bought a load of GF N gauge locos, again all unused. If I can sell those for enough money I could get to keep it, but we'll see

If I'm completely honest, I'm not a fan of 47s. They look very plain and characterless to me. Once I've got it to a reasonable state I think I'll sell it. My 31, a 24/25/26/27 size loco, Hymek and Warship would sort me right out!

I like your pic, very atmospheric. That's exactly how I imagine Derby Lighteeights - rural countryside, church bells and the rasp of that diesel exhaust...

Kept it mate. I wrapped it up in cotton wool, laid it on my bed and loved it until the brass was as hot as a furnace...

Not done anything to it yet, except take it for a few laps around the club track. I was amazed. It's never been run - hardly been out of the box, and is a few years old but it took off like it was a regular runner. Smooth as silk too.

There were a few variations to the window and door patterns in these sets but luckily I have an East Anglian pattern. The only thing I have to change is take off one of the engines - I have a twin power but ER only used power/trailers on Derbys.

I hope to pick up some interiors for it at Telford, plus a running mate if I can!

Hi Steve,
The variations can be a bit confusing. Best reference book I have found up to now which just concentrates on the lightweights is lightweight DMUS by Even Green-Hughes. Plenty of interesting facts on when and where they ran and running numbers included. Wish I could find a good set of scissor gangway connections for my kit built example, the ones on the Backmann version look superb!

Thanks Bill, I have that book. It is genuinely the best railway book I've ever read. Every reference book should should be like this. I have a few other DMU books but they are like simple picture galleries in comparison.

Yes, you're right, those scissors are superbly made, and sprung too. All it would take is a couple magnets to fix these together for a very convincing look.

Can you recommend any other DMU books similar to Lightweight DMUs?

Must admit my sentiments exactly a brilliant book, but the Derby lightweights are my favourite DMU! I have two more books on DMU's but like you found them to be a bit lacking in depth.

Hi Steve,
Just a thought, try Westdale for the interior for your Derby lightweight. I bought a part finished example of Westdale’s Derby lightweight and the seating is not far off the original style. Luckily the previous owner had completed the work so far to a very good standard (very impressed). I was stumped for a while on the correct cab and seating layout until I bought a copy of Lightweight DMU’s. Now at the stage of filling any join lines and removing any stray epoxy from round the door handles etc. Not too good at taking decent photos, but if you are going to Telford and would like to have a look at my progress so far let me know.

Thanks Bill, I will definitely try them and hope to make a purchase at Telford. I'd love to see what you've done to yours. If you can take a general snap I'd love to see that too, just to compare it with my Bachmann. I'll probably need another Derby set, plus a couple 2-car Met-Camm sets and a Cravens 4-car set.
