7mm Manning Wardle Old Class i: a self-designed 'kit'

The olive green in your link looks lovely. By the time it became blue, it was in a very sorry state.....
I did consider lining the latest version I did, but chickened out in the end

I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to recently acquire this secondhand (the line presumably having been completed) railway contractor's engine in 7mm FS - built for its first owner by Mike Osborne, painted by Ian Rathbone, weathered by Martin Welch.
So absolutely no input from me then, other than providing a new shed for it!

You might agree that the painter - who was given free reign to decide upon a livery - made a delightful choice (the livery may be familiar....).

My kit has just been delivered.

Looking forward to building this: probably a winter evenings project.

@John Baker Just wondering, are you still going to market the inside motion kit? I've never built a loco with working inside motion, so that could be a fun addition for me.

Glad it arrived safely :) Yes, the intention is to market the inside motion - to be honest it has taken a bit of a back seat, but the intention is still there!

Graham, if I can remember because it was about 30 years ago when S&D brought out a kit in white metal for the body with a milled chassis kit which was available separately or a complete kit. I thought at the time the body look very chunky and with finances a bit limited due to a young family I decided that I would scratch build the body and use the milled chassis kit. The chimney was turned by a fellow from the GOG who had a stand at Telford who was offering turned parts along with milled chassis kits. He turned me a pair of MW chimneys both the same for very little money. One I used for this build and the other I gave to another gentleman from the Guild whom I was swapping parts with who ran a small kit business who was going to cast a run for me because I was building more MW's.
Unfortunately this gentleman disappeared for several years and subsequently died owing me a fair few favours that i never saw again.
This has happened to me several times which has caused a bit of head scratching and frustration.
Anyway when i moved over to S7 i sold all my F/S locos and other stock. There are more scratch build ones out there but i haven't a clue where any of them are now.
I also bought a Gauge 1 kit of a larger MW from John Dale when I was a bit lost which I didn't finish before I sold it. 20250809_180720.jpg20250809_180915.jpg20250809_180927.jpg

'Sir Berkeley' (class L) is at the Middy this summer.

I noticed the two springs for the safety valves are different lengths. This is because one valve is set to release at 5 psi higher than the other. So if the tops end up at slightly different heights on a model, this does not matter.

Running on the new extension (opened 1st August), returning to Brockford. I know this is a bit gratuitous but I think it's a nice picture.

Perhaps JB might do an L kit as a follow up........but then again in the best MW tradition not all L's were the same..... You can guess how I know this.

Ah, thanks John. I didn't realise anybody made a kit hence my comments. I made mine as one with 3' wheels (the drawings I have of Bamburgh show 3'6") and as usual it's a fairly basic scratchbuild as is the painting. Nothing fancy for my Lt rly engines, they just won't spend the money.

One day I'll get around to adding a crew and weathering it. And deciding what couplings aught really to be fitted! I might even glaze it......

Lovely model! I'll have a go at scratch building one day.....
The wheels on mine are undersized as I went with what Slaters had, but I fully intend to make a set of wheels myself one day to the correct size, when I get round to it!

And yet another MW. This was built from a R&R kit produced with the instructions dated 1976. The original kit was for an K class but I built it as an L class inspired by the 'Sir Berkeley'
Half of R&R was Roger Crumbleholmb who saved 'Sir Berkeley' and is now priproter of Alphagraphix.

It could benifit with a bit more external pipework, etc and some toning down, one day perhaps ;)
