Things are moving along slowly I am looking at how to attach the footplate sections and splashers, I am also beginning to realize that it might be easier to have the drivers set up to drop out as per real practice, because the footplate is by nature a fairly delicate part of the loco. Printed and glued on the back plate for the buffer beam with the rivets embossed in the printable card stock

I worked on the belpair firebox the last couple of days. this also covers the motor.

after the sub frame was set I covered it with a double layer of the printable cardstock stuck down with a brushed on layer of thinned lepages carpenters glue and set the edged with some CA before sanding it smooth at the edge.






I need to make a small gluing jig block to laminate the curved sections of the footplate next.

A little further along and it is beginning to look like a locomotive. a couple of simple gluing templates for laminating the printable cardstock with Carpenters glue. I think that there are a lot of possibilities with this process. I have found that by diluting the glue so that it is the consistency of milk that it is easy to brush on a coat and then quickly lay the next layer by just pressing down with finger pressure is enough to grab then brush another layer of glue and press down the top sheet with the print on. then before it is fully cured and quite soon after gluing I can cut out the three laminations to the print profile easily. the footplate valence? was left overnight with a little weight to ensure it stayed flat it is four layers of printable card.
A little bit of coach weight did the trick.



the jig for shaping both splashers at the same time I was surprised at how easy this went within 10 minutes I removed the form and it was quite stable. the small curve at the top of the picture is for the footplate.



organized chaos I reinforced the inside edges of the footplate with some strip wood. and the frame now lifts off the wheels.


It is getting exciting now because I feel confident that this is all going to work out well.

Some good progress for this new speed that I seem to have fallen into a little bit of cutting and gluing then a nap then a sit for a while with a cup of tea, then some enjoyable browsing here and then suddenly the day has gone and its time to go to bed again.
a form block worked very well for laminating the roof of the cab.

I cut out the open end before the glue was fully cured but after an hour or so which makes the cutting a bit smoother then the edges were treated with the CA glue to harden them up

after trimming the sides off the roof worked out well I should have cut out the roof top hole before removing the side bit it would have made the cutting easier, oh well hindsight.

so the kit of major parts for the cab is almost complete. I have not found any pictures of the inside of the cab so need to figure out how the wheels were covered other than just a box, also what the backhead looked like, I suppose I could just make it a generic looking backhead but it would be nice to have it somewhat like the original loco.

I would of thought that the backhead etc would be similar to a 4F apart from the size of the splashers
4F 44422
or
Big Jim's 4F instructions
No doubt someone will be along soon with a definitive answer.

Rob Thanks for the links I was thinking that this might be a good way to go, after a lot of thinking I decided to use the plastic tube for the boiler as it is the perfect diameter and also adds a lot of strength to the whole assembly.

Using tube for the boiler takes me back many years to the days of 'hacking' 0 gauge Lima 4F's, which, in their time, formed the basis of many unlikely transformations by many modellers. The replacement boiler sections were usually tube which also had the added effect of increased strength and rigidity.
Ah well! We have all moved on a bit from then - and your 2P is coming on beautifully.

I have not found any pictures of the inside of the cab so need to figure out how the wheels were covered other than just a box, also what the backhead looked like, I suppose I could just make it a generic looking backhead but it would be nice to have it somewhat like the original loco.

It appears the wheels were just covered in boxes. - from the Wild Swan monograph.

Yes it was from the Midland Engines No.3 - as mentioned bought for a planned scratch build project as it has lots of dimensioned works drawings.

Pete thank you for the pictures, spent a lovely couple of hours in the workshop this afternoon, it was so nice to get back out there. was a bit challenging trying to make the dome from some rigid PVC. I tried a couple of different methods but gave up and went for some brass so turned up a solid bit the right diameter then hollowed out the lower portion did a few annealings and with the wrong hammers managed to form the lower edge into a reasonable facsimile.





I am hoping the chimney goes as well.

I was able to again get out to the workshop to tackle the chimney I still need to set up a support to finesse the top but am pleased with the progress so far

I think I need to sort out a few more card bits first.

I am enjoying your "alternative medium" build so much Michael! It takes me right back to the innocent days (?) of modelling with scissors, cereal packets, Celotape and Page's gum - and all on Mum's kitchen table!

I try to retain the childish joy of discovering what is possible with improbable media, and the delight obtained when experiments eventually succeed!

Paper and card is such lovely, clean and friendly stuff to work with - isn't it...?!
