Heyside: 7mm L&Y, late 50s/early 60s

Hi

Most of you will know I'm building an exhibition layout based on the Oldham Loop, a 31' by 14' urban environment dominated by the buildings.

I shall post some update pics and videos as I can, but this post is prompted by the arrival of the first signal. It's the bay starter, still lower quadrant L&Y even then. We spent yesterday fitting it to the platform, and it can now be finished off. Built by one of the Heyside gang, Clive Neale, it's a lovely thing, and sets the bar for the rest of the S&T department to work to.

I really believe we're starting to get somewhere now.

Signals add so much to a layout (and make great models in their own right) I'm amazed so many of us never get around to them :scratch:

Clive is an ex BR driver, and is most insistent that all signals look good and work properly, and that we operate to the signals. He also happens to be a gifted modeller.

It helps that there are a reasonable number in the Heyside group, 7 of us, and this enables all areas to move on, and hopefully to maintain standards too. We've had great fun researching the L&Y in BR days around Oldham, and have a couple of other pure L&Y signals in the pipeline for the layout.

Next update will be when the sun comes out.....

Having shown you the signal, it's the turn of the ladder. A candidate for a 'have I taken leave of my senses?' moment.

I don't like etched ladders as they look like, well, etched ladders - one dimensional and with rectangular section rungs. The solution is to build your own. Here, I am using a Southwark Bridge Models jig and etched stiles. All the stiles had to be drilled 0.35mm, and the rungs are 0.3mm wire. It is stronger than the etched version, and looks tons better. Whether you want to put a few hours into building a ladder is up to you.......

I should have enough for 2 signals here, and each ladder kit gives you enough for 4 ladders this length.

I think it was worth the time, etched ladders look awful in comparison, even lost wax look poor as they lack the finesse of one fabricated from wire.

Out of interest, did you have any issues with the stiles buckling during soldering?

Hi Dan

No, I didn't. I used a hot iron and went in quickly with 145. Frankly it took so long to poke the pesky .3mm wire through the  .35mm holes that the whole thing never had the chance to get too hot. The jig is clever in that it has room for expansion built into it too.

If anything I had the opposite problem in that when I cleaned up the outside of the stiles, I found that I hadn't lingered long enough on a few joins and they were dry, ie the rungs pushed in or out. It was a simple matter to swipe over the 2 or 3 with a tinned iron and that did the trick.

By the way, I chemically blackened the jig to stop any solder bleed attaching the ladder to it. That worked well too.

Here's a video from the Xmas running session yesterday. Clive brought along another delightful signal, I've started on the dolls for the gantry, and Geoff Taylor is going to come along to help with the buildings/platforms/walls etc.

Its looking good  but as you say there is still so much more to add as it still looks quite bare. Are you going to extend out at the front and increase the width around the station building? I think it would make a real visual difference.

Very impressive stuff Richard  I love the layout  ;D , the rake of bullied's look great too. I noticed a 6 wheel Stove R (I think they are called that  :scratch: ) in the parcel rake, could I ask what chassis arrangement you have used as it looks to run extremely well  ;D

I'm not sure at the moment. For sure it's a long way down the priority list. The door to the room opens to the left of the station, and only just clears it, so there's no room at home, but a lightweight extension for exhibitions would be possible. The plan is to finish everything else off, and then go back to have a critical look at the buildings. There is some station fencing to be added which will finish that area off a little more.

Hi Phil

The Stove R is a Westdale model. It is very stable and a good runner. It runs on the outer wheelsets which are rigid. The centre axle has the axle beyond the wheels cut off, and it runs in tube with plenty of sideplay. The tube is attached to the chassis with 2 pieces of n/s wire to act as springs. I detailed the construction of this and another Westdale coach in BRM Feb 1995 if you have a copy. I don't know where my copy is as the constant shifting of boxes in the railway room has totally disrupted any semblance of organisation.

There is good scope for shunting. I have added a run round loop to the original plan and extended the sidings both ends. As you look at the left hand end, there are the warehouses, which will see covered vans and parcels stock, while at the right hand end, there is a minerals yard (with the famous three throw turnout!) and a factory loading bay. We anticipate that the yard shunter, who has to operate from the front of the layout will be the busiest operator. Sine you can't reach the sidings from either the front or the back, the vehicles will have to be Dinghammed, and we don't yet have sufficient stock so equipped to operate properly. I also need my L&Y tank finished.

So, considerable scope, but no video yet. I'll add it to the to do list. As we get nearer to exhibition deadline, we shall use the real stock and operate properly. The videos to date are just a hotch pot taster!

Heyside is now 31' by 14' (down from 38' by 17') and I think is better for it. You still can't see the whole layout from any one vantage point, as the viewable section continues round the curves both ends. I discovered that my camera fits nicely inside a mineral wagon, and can operate with the viewer flat against the body (so not out of gauge), so I shall be  able to give you a driver's eye view of the layout shortly!
