As you have probably realised, I prefer to try ideas out rather than stick with one idea. The extended coal yard beyond the furthest siding did not have much appeal to me after I'd done it, so it was dug up and grassed over. One idea I have run with is having the signal box at the neck of the yard...


The back siding had to be renewed. I may end up with piles of coal thrown off wagons onto the ground in place of the bunker...

Many stations did not have coal bunkers/staithes but the coal merchants bagged the coal directly from the wagons, of course you should probably have a weighbridge somewhere...

I like the look of the box at the station throat, it seems more ‘natural’ with that track layout.

I think the little signalbox makes a neat picture out in the countryside along with its tin lavatory. But I can't help considering the operation difficulties with regard to the single line token particularly in inclement weather. The fireman would have to walk to the box to collect the token before departure...


As can be seen, it is quite a distance from the platform end. It's something I need to think about seeing as I've reached the stage of installing point rodding...

For token exchange, would the box work on the viewing side of the line? Okay, you’d see the back of the box, but it would be more true to life.

You could have it in the yard closer to the station, like at Highley.

Rather than moving the box, Larry, it would be totally normal practice for the train to slow right down as it passed the box, for the fireman to collect the token from the signalman.

Just what I needed to read. Thanks. While waiting to see members comments, I whittled a piece of wood to make the foundation for piles of coal...


Sprayed it matt black...


Glued fine coal in the middle and larger lumps on the outer piles. The old coal staithes were reduced to half their height for additional storage...

Seeing that Highley was mentioned earlier then operation at Bewdley requires the signalman to cross two tracks to give the token to Down trains out of Plat 3. There is a boarded crossing provided. There are plenty of videos on-line showing the operation.

Just a few personal thoughts that may have no validity to others:

Something about this box position within the overall scene doesn’t look right.
The angled juxtaposition to the adjacent yard line doesn’t help.
Does the remote location help to draw out the scene, or does it close it up?
You‘d get away with either box or water tower as a balance to the station buildings, but both it seems almost too much?

What factors governing its location would dictate this choice - I can only think of visibility?
Perhaps the factors that from the outset caused you to be drawn to the platform end location are still valid?

Thanks for the posts re the signal box. After positioning the coal tips and staithes in the yard yesterday, it seemed there was enough detail down there without the signalbox, and so it will remain on the station platform. A new addition in this area is a tree. Trees, bushes were purchased from Temu and are okay although I intend spraying some of the more lurid trees...

for the sake of completeness here are two photos of Highley, taken some years ago. The station being on a sharp curve the location makes sense.

Hampton Loade is on a straightish bit so being on the platform made sense there.

Those trees look ok Larry, any chance of getting a link to Temu? Could be useful if you need to really populate an area without breaking the bank.
