1833 CAN MOTORS......heads up

If you rattle in 'Igarashi can motors' into the e-bay search engine you get connected to a guy in the States who is selling these motors at £3.46p each plus post. Now I've acquired one and they are, I think, very good. It compares well with the Mashima 1883 (current price in region of £20) ,has the same shaft diameter , mounting holes  and 5-pole skewed armature .Now these motors might not appeal to the 'a loco's no good unless it's got a mega expensive power source in it '...... but to the rest of us ,in these financially grim times, they are a bit of a bargain . Just thought I'd pass it on for what it's worth  :)

Slightly off topic, but I know someone on here who used the motor from an old cordless screwdriver which he said gave very good results

John,

That's a great lead.  Thanks for the pointer!  For those who are interested in such things the speed performance seems to be very close to recent batches of the Mashima 1833 with both around 8500-8700rpm at 12v.  These motors seem to be down a little on torque/power; ABC quote 2.2w for the Mashima, the Igarashi running to 1.65w according to the sheet posted on eBay.  Fine for shunting locos in 0-gauge though.
