Hi Terry,
I studied photographs of the actual riverbank at Christow.
I then used some dug up dried roots from my garden to imitate the tree roots found in the bank, selecting the root material for scale pieces.
The surface underneath all this is expanded foam so I could push the top end of the root into it, with some glue on to hold, then dress accordingly.
